UK Government Confirms Zero Emissions Target for 2050

The Government has recently signed an international agreement to ensure almost all vehicles sold in the UK by 2050 produce zero emissions.

The signing took place at the international climate conference in Paris, and was signed by the 13 other members of the zero emission vehicle (zev) alliance. Founding members include Germany, Holland, Norway and were joined by regional governments of US States which include California, New York and Maryland.

The international alliance will provide a global initiative to cut transport emissions and promote cleaner motoring. Each member of the alliance has individual targets, all of which revolve around the ultimate goal of making all passenger vehicles produce zero emissions. The UK government believes with the necessary funding and dedication, we can achieve this by 2050.

Industry experts have described the agreement as ambitious but possible providing leading vehicle manufactures can introduce a wider range of zero emission vehicles at affordable prices. According to a recent survey, only 9% of motorists would consider an electric or hybrid model, proving a lack of consumer confidence.

The UK is clearly committed to a greener motoring industry, Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: "The UK already has the largest market for ultra-low emission vehicles in the EU, and the fourth largest in the world and today's pledge reaffirms our commitment to ensuring almost every car and van is a zero emission vehicle by 2050”.

"Electric cars are greener and cheaper to run and we are making them more affordable, spending more than £600 million between 2015 and 2020 to support the uptake and manufacturing of ultra-low emission vehicles here in the UK.

Providing manufactures can mass produce affordable zero emission vehicles and the government can provide the UK with the infrastructure to accommodate such technology. The targets set by the ZEV may well be achievable by 2050.
